It’s something that most older women think that the must have, but most will wonder at these anti-aging skin care creams really effective in helping the skin keep it’s youthful appearance. This is a question that PureNaturalMakeup.com is looking into with this blog.
The main ingredient in anti-aging skin care creams are alpha-hydroxy acids (AHA). These are usually obtained from natural soruces like apples, citrus fruits, sour milk and sugar cane. So it is a natural skin care ingredient. This is used in most anti-aging skin care creams from night creams to chemical peels. They have been proven to enhance the skin’s appearance, but why and how it truly works has long been a mystery – until now.
Researchers at UC Davis and Peking University found a particular ion channel, known as transient receptor potential vanilloid 3, or TRPV3, for short, was activated by the acidic conditions induced with the application of AHA. This caused the channel to open, allowing calcium ions to flow freely into the cell. The overload of calcium ions leads to cell death and the rapid exfoliation of the skin.
So, how does this affect you, when you are purchasing any kind of anti-aging product? You need to be aware how AHAs work because now cosmetic manufacturers are putting them into everything to get us to buy their products. So here are a few tips to make sure that your anti-aging skin care creams will do the job for you.
- Don’t Use Too Many. It’s not necessary to have AHA in each skin care product. The best ones to have them it are an exfoliant and a moisturizer. If you have AHA in to many products, like foundations, cleansers and eye creams, then you could be setting yourself up for having skin irritations.
- Be Careful of Advertising. It’s not necessary to have AHA in products like cleansers and sunscreens. For AHA to be effective it has to be absorbed into the skin. That means that a product that is just wiped over the skin like a cleanser won’t be absorbed and therefore won’t be effective. With sunscreens, because of the pH formulation, AHA don’t function well in them and are of no use.
- Right Amount. Just because a product has AHA doesn’t mean that there is enough. Some cheaper skin care creams will only have a minuscule amount so that they can advertise it as having AHA. For them to be effective it should be around 5 to 8 percent of the ingredients. So check where they are placed on the ingredient list. Ideally they should be second or third for it to meet the concentration criteria.
Anti-aging skin care creams can be effective, but each consumer needs to be aware of what he/she is buying. For more information on natural skin care products you can check out the other blogs on my site here.
