It is possible to keep natural cosmetic and skin care products safe, without having to resort to using toxic preservatives.
For example there are many naturally occurring products that can be used as a preservative in natural cosmetic compounds. This will increase the shelf life of natural cosmetics and keep the products truly natural. This is especially important because if bacteria starts to form in organic cosmetics and skincare problems then this can cause many complications with the skin.
Here is a list of some great natural preservatives that can be used if you make you own natural and organic cosmetics.
Extract from citrus or Grapefruit: The seeds from grape fruit have a compound which is antimicrobial. Grape Seed Extracts also act as a great preservative because they are effective against a broad spectrum of bacteria.
Essential Oils: Some essential oils have excellent antibacterial properties, for example sandalwood, and lavender have antibacterial properties. Tea Tree oil is anti-fungal.
Rosemary Extract: This works as a great anti-oxidant. Use the Extract (which is distilled from the leaves) rather than rosemary essential oil.
Honey: For centuries honey has been used as a natural preservative. If you add it to scrubs, lotions and creams you can introduce a natural moisturiser and at the same time the preservative qualities will increase the shelf-life.
Vitamin E: Vitamin E is used by many cosmetic companies for its anti-oxidation properties. All you have to do to get it is to buy some vitamin E supplement capsules and open them to get the vitamin E out.
Jojoba: This oil can be used as a base ingredient in various creams and scrubs. However it will also increase the shelf life of the products because it’s one of the few base oils with anti-oxidant properties.
The mentioned products are those that you can readily buy and you don’t have to go to specialist stores to find them. You can use them to increase the shelf life of your natural cosmetic products. What else can be done to make sure that bacteria doesn’t get into your natural cosmetics?
Here are some tips for natural cosmetics:
- Always keep the products in dark containers. If it’s oils, then in brown or green glass bottles. Never store products in direct sunlight.
- Use only airtight containers or jars. Air will make the products oxide therefore increasing the bacteria in it.
- Store products in a cool dry place. Heat and moisture is not a good combination for natural cosmetic products.
- Always us a small spoon, spatula or even a toothpick to get the cosmetics out. This is because your finger usually carry a lot of bacteria. If you don’t have one of these to hands, then make sure you wash your hands before using the cosmetics.
Making natural cosmetics at home can be fun and also reassuring. You at least know what you are putting into the product. You are able to choose from a wide range of natural and organic products. However a person needs to be careful because if bacteria get into the natural cosmetics it can cause havoc on the skin.
